Below the Undercroft (Solo)
Below the Undercroft, Delve 2 - by Dalieliquin Nov. 13
We lost Thamos (halfling thief 1) today.
Upon returning from our first foray into the undercroft with some prisoners, we decided that we would return in a couple of days. Rockmound (dwarf fighter 1/cleric 1) is an acolyte as well as a skilled combatant. He prayed over me (Dalieliquin elf magic-user 1/fighter 1) as I rested and my arm fully recovered with only the slightest scar from our encounters in the undercroft.
We were overconfident and buoyed by defeating a band of bandits and, perhaps, too eager to return into the unknown.
After discovering a couple of hidden doors to the West we passed through a one-way passage into a seemingly empty chamber. One of the walls proved to be illusory. I was on my guard as that meant a user of illusions was somewhere in the undercroft. And an illusionist of some talents at that. Is the illusionist in league with the bandits? Well, Thamos, to our regret and his in particular, was the one to discover that the wall was an illusion. As we passed through we were immediately beset upon by two animated corpses. Seeing the abominations sent chills down my spine but Rockmound stepped to the fore. The foul creatures shuffled away from Rockmound as he presented his holy symbol. When they stepped back, we could see a large chest and a clay jar in the far corner. Before we could discuss it, Olbert (human fighter 1) and Jebrial (human fighter 1) pounced upon the zombies hacking one down while Rockmound crushed the other's skull with his mace.
Thamos was quick to investigate the chest but, in the process, triggered a spring loaded needle that jabbed his finger. A tiny prick of blood, but nothing else. We opened the chest and it revealed thousands of pieces of silver. While we started to load up our sacks and back packs, Thamos turned his attention to the clay jar. As he touched the lid, he screamed in agony and started to writhe on the ground. His cheeks were sunken and the skin around his mouth was pulled taut, exposing his teeth and gums in a grimace of terror and pain. The same expression on the faces of the animated corpses guarding this area. It's clear they succumbed to a similar death. Truly a necromancer or a wizard must haunt the undercroft. Illusions, animating the dead and magical symbols causing death. This is no place to be trifled with.
We gathered up Thamos's small body and his gear then left through one of the secret passages. Almost immediately, a cadre of 12 kobolds approached from down the hall. We were ready to attack but they called out to us and it was clear they were friendly. Perhaps they thought we were members of the bandit troop? We assumed that was the case and even gave them 20sp to ensure good will should we meet them again. We will have to tell the mayor that the bandits and the kobolds are probably in league with a wizard of some power.
